Overall Job Purpose: Provide scientific support to seismic analysis (i.e. locating earthquakes, ensuring quality assurance of routine seismic data analysis, assistance with earthquake moment tensor / focal mechanism analysis, preparation of seismic catalogs for research and reporting purposes).

Position Status: Fixed Term Contract: 24 Months

Salary: R 13 000 Per Month

Location: Pretoria

Reporting Line: Manager: Engineering & Geohazards

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Implementation and Task Management of seismic analysis work under guidance.
  • Attention to detail and scientific analysis of seismic data recorded by stations.
  • Work closely with Project Manager and Project Task Leaders on seismic analysis.
  • Provide monthly reports for record-keeping purposes.
  • Liaise with, and assist the technical team.
  • Learning and Development.

BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES AND REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Elementary knowledge of seismic analysis will be highly beneficial.
  • Must be attentive to detail and able to undertake routine work/processing of seismic information.
  • Display the personal character strengths of trust, tact, integrity, and fairness.
  • Ability to manage own tasks and deliver on deadlines.
  • Demonstrate high-level interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to liaise with all levels of the community.
  • Ability to operate computers and knowledge of business support software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Preference will be given to incumbents with prior exposure to SeisComP or SEISAN seismic analysis software packages.

GENERAL

  • Keep abreast of all relevant CGS policies and procedures.
  • Keep a master library of the CGS policies and procedures up to date for use by the office.
  • Perform other ad hoc tasks as required by the Management of the Project Manager.
  • May be required to work long hours.

DISCRETION

  • Sensitivity to confidential information is non-negotiable.
  • Security screening of incumbents might be undertaken.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

  • BSc or B-Tech degree in either seismology or geophysics, with an added advantage given to BSc Hons or MSc or Ph.D. (provided basic training included either seismology or geophysics).
  • Applicants with the requisite degree and geological training (preferably structural geology) will be given an added advantage.
  • Less than one-year experience in the relevant field
