Golder Associates Africa is running an internship program for students that require in service training to finish their NDip qualification, are interested in the geotechnical discipline, and advanced laboratory testing. The Mine Waste Division provides laboratory services related to mine waste, in line with the Golder suite of engineering products. 

This is an internship level in the consulting team and is regarded as a training opportunity in the delivery of tailings and geotechnical services, and also an exciting opportunity for an individual that is up for a challenge and motivated to perform pioneering work.

Location: Johannesburg

Key Duties And Responsibilities Include

  • Conduct geotechnical laboratory tests in accordance with prescribed procedure and recording the results.
  • Assist with basic administration, data capture and laboratory procedures.
  • Assist the Technical Co-Ordinator with laboratory consumables, laboratory equipment, calibrations, cleaning and maintenance.
  • Manage day to day activities and work lookahead on projects.
  • Use advanced techniques, modifications and practices for decision making / recommendations.
  • OH&S Incident reporting.

  • The intern has basic skills in core technical areas and limited specialist skills.
  • Works with specific and regular direction from intermediate and senior staff.
  • Interacts regularly with the direct line of report and project manager.
  • Makes decisions only in limited situations with direction from intermediate and senior staff.
  • Delivers project activities linked to the day to day project requirements with a major focus on laboratory testing.
  • Employees focus on setting a positive example by identifying and reporting hazards, near misses and incidents.
  • Displays a ‘safety first’ focus.
  • Team Player.
  • Intern actively raise safety issues to the attention of peers, contractors and visitors and assist in seeking resolution to the issues identified.
  • Communicates clearly and consistently the importance of health and safety and recognizes those who show the right behaviours.
  • Understand Standards / Processes / Procedures related to advance laboratory tests.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • Busy with NDip qualification in Civil engineering and looking to advance into the geotechnical field.
  • Having some knowledge of geotechnical laboratory testing and critical state soil mechanics is an advantage.
  • High attention to details.
  • MS Word, MS Excel (Advanced), MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Projects.
